Philological
Sketch of the Languages of Aerania
Studying
the philology of the languages of Aerania is no simple task. Its people have a
history spanning more than 25000 years, and ancient sources are rare, belonging
sometimes to legend and sometimes to history. Moreover, these sources are often
imprecise and sometimes fragmentary or contradictory. Nothing ancient is
absolutely certain, yet some broad lines do emerge. Here, then, is a
philological sketch of the languages of Aérianie, in lieu of a precise
portrait.
When the
Aeraltius arrive in Aerianie, in Year 2 of the Moon, they speak a language they
will later call the “forgotten language,” from which Old Aerian will arise
around the 4th century of the Moon — a language spoken on the island of Aeratil
and also known as the common language of the Aeraltius of that era. At that
time, they possess a primitive and rather imprecise ideographic script, used
almost exclusively for making lists. This common language clearly suggests that
other languages existed as well, probably derived, like Old Aerian, from the
forgotten language — or even from Old Aerian itself.
In the 10th
century of the Moon, with the invention of alphabetic writing attributed to
Jenevias and Honories, the Aeraltius undertake to write down an important part
of their oral tradition in the collection L’Aeraltuis, The Beginnings.
They do so in Aerian, which by then has replaced Old Aérian as the language of
Aeratil and as the common language of the Aeraltius.
From that
period onward, Aerian becomes grammatically and lexically stabilized as the
common language, though this does not prevent the addition, over the millennia,
of words corresponding to new realities. Aérian is thus still today the common
language of the Aeraltius.
In
parallel, the Aérian spoken on Aeratil evolves. It transforms into a new
language called Aeratilian, which will one day become Artilian. Artilian will
then divide into three languages: Artilmi, Artian, and Larteli. Artilmi will
itself evolve and, after the existence of several intermediate languages,
become Talmi.
It should
be noted here that Larteli, since that time, has been remarkably stable, for it
is still the vernacular language on the islands of Edjitili and Bosihevaltili,
with few changes. It is thus the oldest vernacular language still spoken in the
archipelago.
Two other
important languages were born directly from Aérian, possibly through partial
fusion with other languages stemming from the forgotten language: Chatrian and
Old Guirian, which in turn transformed into other languages.
It is
likely that all these languages also evolved through contact with languages
outside Aarania, during commercial and cultural exchanges with what we now call
America, Europe, and Africa. The Old Aarian word etedi (flag) is known,
in L’Aeraltuis, The Beginnings, to come from a word of Maoniur
alfutiur ilias (present‑day Newfoundland), in Year 502 of the Moon. This
word still exists in Talmi, though it now means “banner.”
Conversely,
it is also thought that many words in Indo‑European languages may come from Aarian,
such as the Greek word udôr, “water,” which derives from the Aarian ydius,
older by 23000 years.
The
philology of the languages of Aerania thus resembles, to a certain extent, that
of Latin and the Romance languages. Latin, preserved for centuries in its
ancient form as the common language of Christian Europe, also evolved and
blended with other languages to give rise to Romance, Francien, Old French,
then French, as well as other linguistic branches that led to Italian, Spanish,
and several other contemporary languages.
The
following table outlines a kind of genealogical tree of the languages spoken in
Aérianie over the millennia. It includes only the languages for which the Aerian
Archives still contain enough texts to reconstruct a functional grammar and a
meaningful dictionary. Other languages, known only in very fragmentary form but
whose names appear here and there in ancient documentation, are not represented
in the table. Lafian is also known as Alfas, and West‑Grian as Grinon.
In general,
each Aeraltius today speaks three languages: their vernacular language, Aerian,
and a language from outside Aerania — often Spanish, English, or Arabic,
sometimes Portuguese, French, Innu, or Pulaar.
povi rekonstrui funkciantan gramatikon kaj signifan vortaron.
pulaaran.
